Condition

The canvas is lined. There is a faint craquelure pattern which appears stable. Minor surface abrasions in upper left corner; to bottom of the post in lower left corner and along centre of lower edge; otherwise the work appears in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals an area of retouching near upper left corner, also a few further small areas in the sky upper right and above the jockey's head. A couple of small spots along the lower edge. Held in a gilt moulded frame, ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

Here Henry Alken portrays Samuel Spode, horse trainer and painter (see preceding lot), training Eastern Bere at full gallop while watched on by an elegantly dressed couple, presumably the owners. 'Spode wears the blue sleeves and black body of the owner's silks and instead of a jockey's cap, wears a cream-coloured top hat.' (Daire O'Connell, America's Eye, op. cit., p.97)
