Catalogue Note
The opening of Selfridges at the 'unfashionable' end of Oxford Street in 1909 saw great success for the American Gordon Selfridge. In 1921 he moved to Landsdowne House in Berkeley Square, originally built as a family home for the first Marquess of Landsdowne. In Beerbohm’s cartoon, Selfridge is being shown around the house by the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice (1845-1927).
