Catalogue Note
Jascha Heifetz, 1901-1987, is considered among the premier violinists in history. A prodigy in youth, Heifetz was already playing with the Berlin Philharmonic at age 11 and at Carnagie Hall by age 16. Heifetz’s musical career spanned 65 years, with world tours, including several visits to Israel. Heifetz and Rubin were friends; they met in the late 1920s in New York through a mutual acquaintance. Rubin said of his friend "I was greatly taken with him and deeply impressed by his confidence in his own talent. It was like a dose of good medicine to me, for I was always worried, insecure and riddled by self-doubt." (Rubin, My Life My Art, p. 176). The two remained friends for life, and Rubin’s reverent rabbi held special significance for Heifetz, hanging in his Los Angeles studio for many years.
