Condition
This work is still stretched on its original stretcher. The canvas is unlined. It does not seem to have ever been cleaned or varnished. Some of the original paint layer reads strongly, but no retouches are apparent. It is recommended that the work be hung in its current state. Catalogue Note
“In [Clausell’s] landscapes… light is not dramatic in form; rather, one senses an attitude at once nostalgic and evocative. However, his seascapes reflect the stronger aspect of the artist’s temperament. These constitute another vision of nature held by the artist, who succeeds at apprehending the fleeting impression that the eye has of the object, especially in the case of water, the ocean and its movement or in the reflections found in still waters. The preferred pretext for the treatment of light and color is the seascape and in them he is able to capture the luminous movements in water.” —María del Carmen Chicharro Serra, “Clausell, un pintor de realidades fragmentadas” in Joaquín Clausell y los ecos del impresionismo en México (exhibition catalogue), Museo Nacional de Arte, Mexico City, 1995, p. 70
