Catalogue Note

Île belonged to the influential early American Fauve and Cubist collector, T. Catesby Jones. In the summer of 1930, when he was at the height of his collecting activity, he lent the work to one of the first exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Upon his death in 1947, Catesby Jones bequeathed his significant collection to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, which formed the core of the museum’s French modern art collection.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Gérard Denizeau.
