Catalogue Note
Justin Pieris Deraniyagala was a Sri Lankan artist who exhibited in London, Paris, Venice, São Paulo, Pittsburgh and Colombo during his lifetime. He was awarded a UNESCO prize at the 28th Venice Biennale in 1956. The present work was acquired in Paris whilst he attended the Académie Julian, a private art school for painting and sculpture. Petit éléphant au repos was one of Bugatti's final models and illustrates the artist's extraordinary skill for capturing both form and mood. Another cast from this edition resides in the National Gallery in Prague.
