Condition

Executed on cream laid paper, not laid down, hinged in three places along the upper edge and floating in its mount. The edges are slightly unevenly cut and there are two artist's pinholes to the extreme left edge. The sheet is gently undulating in places due to the application of the medium. The sheet is slightly time-stained and there are some scattered spots of foxing, notably around the male figure's legs and along the lower edge of the sheet. There is a paper loss (circa 10cm) to the centre of the extreme lower edge and some repaired tears in places visible along the left, right and lower edges with some creases visible, including a faint horizontal flattened crease parallel to the right edge. The colours are strong and the work is in overall stable condition.

Catalogue Note

‘What Kokoschka achieves above all with the gestures he bestows upon his sitters is a buildup of tension. Their arms and hands often come across as channels of energy, characterising the person portrayed.’
