Condition
Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down and hinged to the mount in two places along the upper section. There is tape affixed along the edges of the verso of the sheet and creases to the upper and lower right corners, and there is a repaired tear to the upper right corner. There are some minor surface scratches to the thicker black pigment, probably inherent to the artist's practice. This work is in overall very good condition.

Catalogue Note
In January 1926, Kirchner made his first trip to Dresden after the war where he stayed with art historian Will Grohmann. During his trip he was introduced to Grohmann’s lifelong friend, the famous dancer and choreographer Mary Wigman. Kirchner was mesmerised by the movement he saw at Mary’s dance school and drew a number of her best pupils, including Gret Palucca, the subject of the present work. These drawings comprise some of Kirchner’s most dynamic and innovative depictions of the human being in motion.
