- A SMALL TRAVELLING CLOCK IN SHITAN CASE, 19TH CENTURY
- shitan, brass, glass, metal
- height including handle 6 1/2 in. 16.5cm.
• 1 1/2-Inch dial with fixed hand and twelve movable hour plaques, with half markers, set on a rectangular plate engraved with foliate sprays and two apertures for the calendar, the bell striking movement with turned pillars, fusee and chain for the going train with verge and balance escapement, the strike with spring barrel, the backplate engraved with floral sprays and mounted with set-up wheels, decorative count wheel and ratchets cut for Japanese striking, the case with turned columns and finials, surmounted by the bell, raised on a wood stand incorporating the key drawer; with glazed Shitan wood travel with gilt-brass handle
Condition
CASE
Wooden exterior box in overall fair condition with wear to the corners, some chips to the wood on the corners, notably on the top front, the top panel with some repair and glue residue, the wood panelling slightly open and not flush fitting, the brass handle with loss of finish. Some of the feet to the wood box replaced. The glass to the back door has glue residue. The brass plates and panelling to the clock itself with loss of finish, light scratches and pitting overall consistent with age.
DIAL
Dial in good condition with spotting and oxidation overall. Some of the movable tiles with loss of finish and oxidation.
MOVEMENT
The balance oxcillates lightly when wound. Repeat barrel missing a male key and cannot be wound, therefore chiming cannot be tested. The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. We would recommend having the movement serviced.
