Catalogue Note
“Rare Handcrafts” is a collection of artisanal timepieces that ecompasses six different specialist crafts: marquetry, gem setting, guilloché, chain smithery, enamelling and engraving. This collection of watches are showcased annually at Baselworld.
The purpose of such a collection is to preserve and raise awareness of the artisanal skills that have been directly associated with horology for more than four centuries. Patek Philippe’s commitment in creating such fascinating and eye-catching timepieces has successfully aided a group artisans to master and nurture the skills of their guild with virtuosity but also perpetuated many exceptional one-of-a-kind creations which includes, pocket watches, wristwatch and the table clock. Patek Philippe also obtained the title of guardian of ancestral Genevan traditions through this creation.
The present lot was a cover piece that was featured in the catalogue of the “Rare Handcraft” in 2015. It is a unique openface pocket watch reference 982/159G that is decorated with the inspiration from the Japanese Cherry. The case back is embellished with hand-engraved branches that utilizes high-relief techniques against a pinkish cream colour enamel background. The pendant bow is also decorated with a hand-engraved motif. The present lot includes a handcrafted white-gold stand with its base in red lacquer over wood resembling traditional Japanese lacquer and echoing the colours of cherries and an 18k white gold Patek Philippe pocket watch chain.
