Catalogue Note
Cartier’s expertise in ‘Tutti Frutti’ jewels began in 1901 when Queen Alexandra commissioned Pierre Cartier to create a necklace inspired by the magnificent jewels of Southern Asia. Ten years later, Jacque Cartier embarked on a voyage to India that would alter the course of jewelry in the Western world. There, Cartier sought the traditional expertise of master craftsmen in carving rubies, sapphires and emeralds into leaf designs and cabochon berry & floral shapes. Gemstones, especially ruby and emeralds, are notoriously difficult to carve due to their delicate nature. By mastering such techniques which had not been used in Europe before, Cartier incorporated this style to separate themselves from other competing design firms such as Van Cleef & Arpels to name a few and reserved this style for only their most important commissions and royal clientele. Today, the Cartier “Tutti Fruitti” motif style of design is recognized as one of the rarest and sought after forms of Cartier creations and for many collectors a true trophy to collect. The “Tutti Frutti” design concept was first inspired by the western world’s fascination with Egypt and India, which was stimulated by accounts of artists and travellers visiting these far away and enchanted lands. The present tutti-frutti clock consists of a mixture of rubies, emeralds, Tahitian mother-of-pearl and diamonds that give so much colour and are set in the iconic style of craft-gem leaves, flowers and floral baskets.
To the best of our knowledge, no comparable contemporary clock has ever appeared at auction or can be found in literature. Set with over 17 carats of rubies, over 8 carats of emeralds and over 2 carats of diamonds, the present clock is in excellent overall condition and complete with its original fitted presentation box.
