Catalogue Note

Elisabeth Philippe Marie Hélène de France, known as Madame Elisabeth, daughter of Dauphin Louis and granddaughter of Louis XV, was born on 3 May 1764. She resided in Versailles where she had delivered on 14 January 1779, a commode realized by Jean-Henri Riesener for her apartment's bathroom. The inventory O1 3320 (years 1778 to 1783) of France's National Archives bears the following caption 'Année 1779, du 14 janvier: RIEZENER: Livré par le Sieur Riezener pour servir dans l'appartement de Madame Elisabeth au Château de Versailles, Pièces des bains: Une commode bois des Indes satiné et amarante à dessus de marbre bourbonnais et à trois tiroirs fermant à clefs ornée de chutes, sabots, moulures, rainceaux médaillons et entrées de serrures de bronze ciselé et doré d'or moulu longue de 2 pieds ½ sur 20 pouces de profondeur et 32 pouces de haut' (Year 1779 of 14 January: RIEZENER: Delivered by Monsieur Riezener to serve in the apartment of Madame Elisabeth at the Château de Versailles, Bathroom : An Indian wood and amaranth wood commode with satin finish, with Bourbonnais marble top and three drawers lockable via key, decorated with sprays, feet tips, moldings, scrollwork, medallions and chiseled gilt bronze of ground gold key lock entrances, length of feet  2 ½ feet long by 20 inches deep and 32 inches high) matching our commode.
