Condition

This rare Gio Ponti lamp is in very good, original condition overall. Very minor scuffing and scratches throughout consistent with gentle use. The piece presents with small, scattered areas of enamel loss particularly concentrated on the sides, base, and back, which are not visually distracting. The brass elements are lightly oxidized and show signs of pitting consistent with use and the natural evolution of the metal. Please note that the coloration of the enameled metal is vibrant orange (less red than conveyed in the catalogue illustration). Please ask a member of the department for additional photographs. Sotheby's does not guarantee electrical components and suggests having all wiring inspected by a licensed electrician. A rare example by Ponti that presents very well overall.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

This rare offering is one of only a few known extant examples of Gio Ponti’s “Proteo” lamp.  The elegant arcs of the tiered sheet metal shade elements provide a soft gradual dispersal of light and gracefully echo the curved arm of the vivid base.  Executed in the 1960s, the lamp is an example of Ponti’s architectonic forms and is an important model produced by Sagim, a small lighting company in the Veneto region.

Sotheby's would like to thank Brian Kish for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
