Description

  • 5 cm,  2 in.
of square section surmounted by a Qilin seated on its haunches with the body hunched, the beast depicted with a bifurcated mane and taut muscles detailed with fine incisions. the seal face carved with an inscription reading le min zhi le, (When a ruler rejoices in the joy of his people, they also rejoice in his joy)

Provenance

Collection of Gustav Detring (1842-1913) and/or Constantin von Hanneken (1854-1925), and thence by descent.

Condition

The seal is in overall good condition with the exception of several shallow chips to the corners and edges including a few to the edges of the seal face (the largest approx. 0.5 x 1 cm), and some bruising in various areas including a minor one to the tip of the beast's snout. The stone has some natural inclusions and fissures. With slightly more red undertones compared to that illustrated in the catalogue.
