Condition

This work is in original unlined condition. There is a patch adhered to canvas to the left of the stretcher bar and evidence of a possible repair to the canvas at upper left when viewed from the reverse. The colors remain bright though the surface is visibly dirty. There is a web of craquelure across the picture surface, with scattered areas of minor pinpoint losses and lifting in the background and foreground, including on the figure's face, outlining the dip of her chin, on her chest, and helmet. There is also a diagonal scratch with associated loss on the top of the figure's helmet. There is an additional small area of loss at lower left. Abrasion is scattered at the extreme edges. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. There are finely applied dashes of retouching to the figure's proper right eye, lower lip, tip of her nose, eyebrow and just above and to the right of her helmet; as well as strengthening along the contours of her chin and neck. There are a few scattered, finely applied retouches in the water, and some scattered brushy retouches in the sky and in her hair at lower left. There is an area of inpainting on the neck of the tallest vase that corresponds with the aforementioned patch.
