Description
- Portrait of King Henry IV, full length, on a rearing horse
- oil on canvas
- 56 7/8 by 42 1/2 in.; 144.5 by 108 cm.
Condition
The canvas appears to be thinly lined. The painting presents a striking image beneath an old varnish. There are some diagonal stretcher bar marks on each quadrant and the canvas has some faint undulations to the surface. There is an old repair puncture on the head of the horse, and an old repaired horizontal tear to the background at center left. There are some minor losses and scuffing at the extreme edges. Inspection under UV reveals a varnish that fluoresces unevenly and is difficult to read through, however there is likely restoration beneath the varnish scattered here and there. Painting is offered in a carved and gilded wood frame.
