Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in very good condition overall. Retouching to compensate for losses have shifted slightly in tone and can be confirmed with ultraviolet illumination. Residues of aged, discolored varnish further contribute to the yellowish patchiness across the picture. The largest areas of restoration are found along the top 3-4 inches of the panel and appear to be in locations where original tracery would have been situated. It is unlikely the artist would have continued the composition into these areas, thus requiring the current reconstruction in the absence of tracery elements. Some fading may have occurred in the red lake used in Christ's cloak, leading to the somewhat mottled appearance of this passage. Small flake losses are found along the joins, which are visible as hairline cracks from the front. The wood panel support retains its original thickness and new crossbars have been slotted into the channels on the reverse. Cleaning can be expected to improve the overall appearance by revealing the bright palette and allowing the strength of the graphic style to be better appreciated.
