上款：一九六三年八月廿日，逢吳湖帆七十壽辰，遐邇親朋，咸來祝賀，文藝界好友亦繪書畫致賀，本幅即劉海粟賀壽之作。
註：吳、劉相識於三十年代，雖藝術觀念不盡相同，然劉氏早歲曾研習中國傳統古代書畫，並涉收藏，與吳湖帆由此產生交集，〈醜簃日記〉中多次載及吳為劉鑑別書畫，或共同鑑賞相互藏品。吳湖帆一九三八年曾如此評論劉氏：「近日談論古畫亦漸投契。」一九五六年，上海中國畫院籌備時曾遍邀上海畫家提名畫師，吳將劉置於「甲字」一等，劉則提名吳為院長，相互推許，可窺一斑。
