Lined. There is minor surface dirt and dust and fine, faintly visible craquelure across the picture surface. There are a few minor white accretions around the boat and figures and minor frame abrasion scattered at the extreme edges. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green. Finely applied dashes and small areas of inpainting scattered throughout, including the corners and particularly along the right edge.

A student of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann (who counted Édouard Joseph Dantan, Julien Dupré and Camille Pissarro among his students), Jules Scalbert began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1876, winning medals in 1891 and 1901. His works are held in a number of French institutions including Le musée de la Chartreuse, Douai, and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
