Condition
This work is in very good and sound condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges of each quotation mark, including a few pinpoint losses at the extreme edges, a minor, areas of hairline craquelure along the extreme edges and some smudging and pinpoint spot accretions on the unpainted interior and exterior of each quotation mark. Under extreme raking light, very faint and unobtrusive hairline surface abrasions are visible, most notably two on the right quotation mark and two on the left quotation mark.

Catalogue Note
“But it was purely as marks themselves—as special punctuation—that Artschwager began to employ them in elemental shapes of black painted wood...originally conceived as gigantically enlarged drawing marks—accents—they assumed independent life and validity…they could be seen as abstracted punctuation or even as odd musical notations. Terse, arresting, and enigmatic, they seem quintessentially Arstchwager.” Richard Armstrong in Exh. Cat., New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Artschwager, Richard, New York 1988, pp. 34-35
