Condition

Colour: The colour in the catalogue illustration is fairly accurate although the overall tonality is cooler in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. The sheet is hinged verso to the backing board in numerous places and undulates very slightly. Extremely close inspection reveals a minute media accretion to the lower center right of the white boarder and a few tiny splash accretions to the coloured pigment, which look to be original.

Catalogue Note

“In my recent colour work I have been using stripes, either parallel or twisting around each other, because they are unassertive forms. Form and colour seem to be fundamentally incompatible – they destroy each other. In my earlier work, when I was developing complex forms, the energies of the medium could only be fully released by simplifying colour to a black-and-white constant (with ocassional grey sequences). Conversely colour energies need a virtually neutral vehicle if they are to develop uninhibitedly. The repeated stripe seems to meet these conditions.” Bridget Riley in conversation with Robert Kudielka in: ‘Conversation’, Robert Kudielka on Bridget Riley: Essays and Interviews 1972-2003, p. 20
