the gilt-tooled green leather inset top above an arrangement of nine drawers to each side, the central frieze drawer to each side fitted with a baize lined hinged writing surface, the drawers with inlaid ivory letters, one side sun-bleached
Provenance
Acquired from Stanley J. Pratt Antiques, London, 1964.
Condition
The desk has been restored but would benefit from further attention. Leather inset top is a later replacement but is attractively worn with splits, scuffs, scratches and old stains and ring marks consistent with age and use. Top and base are integral. Surface re-polished but one side is very bleached from sun damage and there are age cracks the full height to each side. Moulded edge to top on bleached side has been reattached and crude nail repair is visible as are corresponding loses and cracks to banding/veneers to top. Locks replaced and drawers to sides are now lined with a yellow baize. Drawers on bleached side fitted with a later divide. Please note central frieze drawer to each side fitted with a baize lined hinged writing surface - and not as stated in the printed catalogue. Generally with old marks, scuffs, chips and loses consistent with age and use. Gallery inspection recommended.
