The two lanterns are not an exact pair, one is slightly larger and heavier, the painting is slightly different. There are losses to the lacquer to the corners and edges of the bases on both lanterns. There are larger losses to the feet, some with the textile visible. There are long cracks to the lacquer on the bases of both lanterns, overall wear and areas of retouching and repainting. On the stand on the left of the catalogue illustration, there is a ca. 3 x 2 cm restored dent to one side and a ca. 25 cm horizontal crack to one of the square painted panels.
