Condition
Very good condition overall. Back of the base is broken but well patinated. Open crack, inherent to the wood, running down the back, from the top of the head to the bottom. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.

Catalogue Note
Sur l'île de Nias, toutes les statues en bois sont appelées adu - esprit ancestral - et se rattachent au monde surnaturel ou au monde des esprits. Sculpté avec le plus grand soin, placé à la vue de tous devant la fenêtre de la maison ou accroché au toit, l'adu siraha salawa protège le chef du village et sa communauté. Tant le style que l’iconographie permettent d’attribuer cette œuvre aux populations vivant au centre de Nias, à l’origine de la tradition des adu (Sibeth et Carpenter, Nias Sculpture, 2013, p. 104). Tout en tension, le personnage tient dans les mains deux pilons rituels, témoins de son rôle cultuel. La beauté des ornements (coiffe, boucles d’oreille et traditionnel collier torsadé kalarbabu) signifiait la noblesse du défunt, sa richesse et son prestige. La grande qualité sculpturale – visible dans les méplats marquant les genoux et dans la puissance du visage aux traits anguleux - ainsi que sa patine témoignent d'une ancienneté remontant au XIXe siècle.
