Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The face has been a little bit blunted by time. Bears an old label from the Morigi collection to the reverse.

Catalogue Note

« Les plus appréciées et les plus emblématiques de toutes les parures traditionnelles étaient et demeurent les pendentifs à forme humaine appelés hei tiki. Les hei tiki étaient portés par des hommes, des femmes et des enfants de haute lignée pour indiquer l’importance de l’origine et du statut de leur famille » (Austin, La pierre sacrée des Maori, 2017, p. 26). Leur important pouvoir (mana) se renforçait à chacune de leur transmission, de génération en génération. Au sein du corpus,ce pendentif se distingue par sa taille miniature, concentrant toute la force expressive de l'art Maori.
