Catalogue Note
Ce réceptacle ovoïde, superbement élaboré, s’inspire de la forme du seau à lait traditionnel amathunga des cultures de langue Nguni. Il était vraisemblablement réservé à l’usage d’un individu de haut rang, pour y conserver du tabac à fumer ou à priser, pour décorer sa maison et afficher son pouvoir. Le décor géométrique, en registres de rainures parallèles profondément gravées, évoque la robe traditionnelle des femmes Zulu. On le retrouve sur nombre d’objets de cette région, notamment sur deux autres réceptacles très apparentés, le premier dans la collection de l'Art Institute of Chicago (inv. n° 1979.539), le second conservé au British Museum (inv. n° Af1936, 1015.13.a-b), acquis dans les années 1860.
