Catalogue Note

Fabio Benzi, Mario Sironi, Il percorso della pittura, in Mario Sironi, 1885-1961, Milano, 1993, catalogo della mostra, p. 34 "Right after 1950, Sironi’s artistic production opened up to different themes. Exuberance of the paint quality characterized these new choices: his brush would leave on the canvas large and “dirty” strokes, drippings and smudges that recalled the majestic and violent gestures of bigger works but also the different climax of the time. His opening to new experiences and his will to confront himself with different realities by looking at international exhibitions, demonstrate that the artist had become more interested in the external environment as opposed to the local one. That is why Michel Tapie in 1952 included him in his book Un art autre: the book was a manifesto about the main characters of art of matter’s new tendencies.
