Condition

This work is in generally good overall condition. Colours are less dark, warmer and the background more golden, compared to the catalogue illustration. There are small losses by the corners. There are two threads which are detached lower right. There are few small scratches along the lower left edge. There is some minor and stable craquelures by some of the white sails and below the yard. The scattered browning is inherent to the interaction between the materials chosen by the artist. No traces of retouching appear to be visible under UV light.

Catalogue Note

"We were all enraptured by his spasmodic desire of living. His liveliness was like an erupting volcano. In this he was contagious, endemic, overwhelming: in his way of walking into a room, sitting on a chair, riding a motorcycle he had a grip on the surrounding space that was vital and never arrogant. And yet he had a sweetness and fragility that were anomalous for such a fearless and explosive personality.
It is merely a question of time. One day or another a silver steamboat shining in the sunlight with its deck full of strange and marvelous objects will appear on the horizon over a mother of pearl sea, a tonality of the sea that only in September can be seen…"
