Condition

The overall tonality is darker in the original work than in the printed catalogue illustration. The blue stone in the lower part of the torso is slightly brighter. There is a thin layer of dust in the creases mainly located around the red and blue stones. The metal structure on which the lead is affixed is visible on the back of the figure and show traces of oxidation are located mainly on the back of the figure. The stone artist base reveals a former restoration on upper part. This work is in very good original condition.

Catalogue Note

Fully aware of the avant-gardes of her time, Germaine Richier created her first glass-incrusted lead sculptures in 1952. The experiment only lasted five years during which she produced an outstanding body of unique pieces showing the full extent of her researches on form and material. With marks of the artist's hand here and there on the metal, Plomb avec verre de couleur, no. 49 is probably one of the most remarkable examples of this period emblematic of Richier's constant search for the right balance between tension and harmony, resilience and sensitivity. In addition to its scarlet eye and heart-shaped fragments of glass incrusted in ash concretions judiciously placed in the sculpture, Plomb avec verre de couleur, no. 49 also displays a singular versatile aspect.
