Condition

This unique photographic object is in generally very good condition. The print is flush-mounted to foamcore. As is usual with Peter Beard's process, there are a few faint surface scratches and disruptions, fingerprints, adhesive remains, and scattered deposits of paint and ink overall. The photograph is annotated in blue ink: '"Why, why does heaven bequeath such gifts to fascinate all ages, that mark with magnet charm, till something lifts the mark, and shows how foully dark the dazzling reptile is within / Beneath the painted shining skin?" (Eliza Cool) from Eyelids of morning the mingled destinies of crocodyles [sic] & men' and signed 'Peter Beard - Lake Rudolf croc & Naomi Simms 1972.' There are two collaged contact sheet fragments: one showing zebras and one of a man with a large fish. There is faint silvering in the darkest areas of the print, primarily along the edges. There are several creases, particularly along the lower edge and corners, with small, attendant chips to the emulsion. There are tack holes in each margin corner.
