Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor pitting to the surface, and there are a few minor casting flaws. There is minor wear to the patina in the face.

Catalogue Note

Hartwell studied at the City and Guilds Schools, Kennington and then at the Royal Academy Schools from 1896. He worked as a pupil of Onslow Ford and Hamo Thornycroft and exhibited at the RA from 1900. He became an ARA from 1915 and an Academician nine years later.
