dated: MDCL and inscribed: + AFULGURE ET TEMPESTATE LIBERA NOS DOMINE (From lightning and storm, deliver us, O Lord)

Condition

Overall the condition of the bell is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and utilitarian context. The casting is rough in areas, particularly around the handle. There is some dryness to the lacquer patina, as well as minor greening in areas. There are some chips around the bottom edge, and there are minor nicks and scratches throughout. There is corrosion to the iron clapper, consistent with the material. While the clapper clearly has age, it is possible that it could have been replaced at a later date. There is particular surface wear to the top of the wood base due to contact with the heavy bronze; otherwise the condition of the base is good.
