  • Eight silver boxes and cigarette cases, 17th - 19th century
  • ivory, silver

comprising: an oval snuff or spice box, maker’s mark only, IA below a crown, probably London, circa 1680, each end with initials M.M. and C.F, 5.6cm., 2 ¼ in. wide; a rectangular example, unmarked, probably English, circa 1710-1720, with Berain ornaments, the interior of lid with ivory to support miniature now missing, 7.5cm.,  3 in. wide ; a plain oval, probably English, circa 1720, the interior of the lid set with a later glazed erotica  watercolour on paper,  9.5cm., 3 ¾ in. wide ; a double compartment snuff box, unmarked, probably English, circa 1790, brigt cut engraved with a crest and a monogram, 9cm., 3 1/2 in. wide ; a rectangular example, maker's mark only WK, English, circa 1840, reeded pattern with bulbous flower borders, gilt interior, 6.7cm., 2 5/8 in. wide ; two rectangular examples, French, circa 1900, gilt interior, 8.5cm., 3 3/8 in. wide, 8.2cm., 3 31/4 in. wide, a cigarette case, James Deakin & Sons, Chester, 1897, gilt interior, 8.3cm., 3 1/4 in. high; and an electroplated cigarette case, 8.7cm., 3 3/8 in. long

Condition

overall wear and a few dents, especially to 17th century spice box and Chester cigarette case, would recommend viewing.

The erotica box contains a provenance letter reading: ‘this box was given me by my Grand Aunt Mrs E. Oliphant Febry 18th 1772, to keep in remembrance of her, & of Mrs Barbera Belshes her deceas’d sister, to whom it formely belong’d’, signed ‘Belshes’.
