Catalogue Note

The scene on the cup, 'L’agréable leçon’, is probably from an engraving by René Gaillard after François Boucher, announced in the Mercure de France, February 1758 (See Geoffrey de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2009, Vol. III, p. 1021). Chabry also used this subject on a gobelet 'litron' from the previous year, part of the D. M. Currie Bequest in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The subject on the saucer, also after Boucher is probably from an engraving after Demarteau and is known under several titles, 'La Missive', 'Les deaux confidentes' and 'Le Messanger Aile’.

An unmarked cup similar is in the Wallace Collection, see Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, Vol. II, pp. 537-9, cat. No. C363.

Etienne-Jean Chabry was a painter, gilder and burnisher active at Sèvres 1764-87. He is known for figural subjects, in particular pastoral scenes after Boucher. He worked almost exclusively on teawares and écuelles. Records show he was comparatively poorly paid and this may have led to him leaving the factory in 1787 to become a grocer in the village of Sèvres. He was related to Dodin and Choisy through the marriage of his sisters.
