Catalogue Note
A gobelet 'Bouillard' et soucoupe almost certainly from the same service was in the collection of R. Spencer C. Copeland, Esq, sold Sotheby's London, 13th July 1976, lot 25.
The decoration of this cup and saucer can be compared to the slightly varied decoration seen on two services delivered in the same year, those of Louis-Charles-Auguste Le Tonnelier, Baron de Breteuil, on the 16th April, and the so-called 'Sheremetev' service, delivered in two parts to Nikolai Konstantinovich Chotinski, Russian chargé d'affaires to France, the former of which also included teawares, listed by David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services, Vol. II, Little Berkhamsted, 2005 pp. 385-86, 401-2.
Bird designs such as these were based on the engravings published by George Edwards, A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, which was published in France titled 'Histoire Naturelle de Divers Oiseaux' in 1745 and 1748.
