Condition

The canvas has an old lining. The paint surface shows some signs of wear throughout. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals and uneven varnish and some localised retouchings, but no major damage. Offered in a carved and gesso gilt frame with some losses.

Catalogue Note

James Irvine's letter to Sir William informing him of the purchase of this painting reveals the agent's propensity for negotiation on behalf of his client. The picture is listed (along with lot 43) against the 'price asked - 30 Louis' and the 'price paid - 20 Louis.'1
