in gold and enamels, crowned shield of arms bearing the lion rampant of Scotland set before the cross of St. Andrew with motto 'FAX MENTIS HONESTAE GLORIA', with later watermarked beige silk suspension ribbon contemporary gold sliding catch and a gold mounted cornelian intaglio fob seal carved with the badge of Nova Scotia and the initials 'WF' (2)

Literature
Possibly ordered through James Cummyng, clerk of the Baronets of Scotland acting on behalf of Sir William. There is a receipt from him in the Fettercairn Papers, Edinburgh, 12 July 1776; 'received from Sir William the sum of five guineas for the purpose of providing for him a Baronets Gold Badge for which sum I am obliged myself to be accountable to him before the 25 October', NLS (Acc.4796/216)
There is a further bill addressed to Sir William for a new ribbon, probably to suspend this gold badge from Robert and William Gray, Goldsmith, Silversmith & Cutlers, 13 New Bond Street, London, 20 June 1786; 'new ribbon to chain & box, £6-2-6',

Condition
In very good condition. Enamels stable. In random associated blue case. Silk tired sliding catch possibly original.
Red seal good.
Both with minor signs of wear.
