Catalogue Note
James Irvine describes the dealer from whom he acquired this work: '[...] of all those I met with at Milan Sodani appeared to me to have the most natural taste and discrimination.'1 It appears that Irvine may have been looking for a work by Poussin to no avail, as he writes rather despondently to Sir William: 'The little Poussin is of no great consequence, but [...] I despair of getting a fine specimen by him.'2
