Catalogue Note

These grand drawings are copies after the modelli that Rubens produced for the tapestries depicting The Secular Hierarchy in Adoration (modello now lost) and The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy in Adoration (modello now in The J. B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville) for the convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. Rubens was commissioned by the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), daughter of Philip II of Spain, to design a series of tapestries, known as The Triumph of the Eucharist.  For more information on the series and these specific compositions, see N. de Poorter's entry (see Literature).
