Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable and secure; there is slight raising of paint along the stretcher marks and elsewhere across the paint surface. The canvas has lost tension causing gentle undulation across the surface. There is 5" long restored loss through the sitter's hat, lower left. Elsewhere, there is minor scattered paint loss across the surface. The paint texture is well preserved, particularly the impasto in the braiding to the sitter's waistcoat. The surface is covered in a discoloured and degraded varnish; it's removal would improve the overall tonality. The painting is in a good state of preservation and structurally sound.
