Catalogue Note
The sitter was the fourth son of James Johnstone, 5th Lord Ruthven of Freeland, and Lady Anne Stewart, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Bute. He served in the navy, becoming a lieutenant in 1760. In 1762 he was wounded while in command of HMS Terpsichore, when it captured the French ship the Marquis de Marigny. He died in 1771 while serving as Captain of HMS Glory. We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his help when cataloguing this lot.
