Catalogue Note

The first view shows the Western 'Hongs' in Canton as rebuilt in the mid-1840s, together with junks and sampans along the quayside; on the right are the flags of the United States, France, Britain and Denmark (denoting the premises of Jardine, Matheson whose directors held the position of Danish consul). In front of the British Hong is Christ Church, whose opening service was held in February 1849.
