  • Roman Emperor, the head orned with laurel wreath
  • partially gilt alabaster relief ; in a gilt wood pastiglia frame
  • relief : 12 x 9,5 cm; cadre : 21,5 x 19 cm; relief: 4 3/4  by 3 3/4 in., frame: 8 1/2 by 7 1/2 in.

Condition

Overall good condition. A rectangular lack (1x2cm) to the alabaster in the upper right hand corner. Minor surface dirt in crevices. A few fine hairline fissures visible to the surface of the alabaster in particular to the emperor's neck and wrist. The gilt-wood frame with joints visible and a few lack to the outer edge.

Catalogue Note

For this composition, the artist was inspired by an engraving depicting the Emperor Tiberius by Aegidius Sadeler (1570-1629), after Titian (1485-1576).
