Catalogue Note
In 1892, rich banker baron Jonas Vitta commissions Jean-Camille Forgé to build his residence by the Leman Lake in Evian, later baptised "La Sapinière". Since he died the same year, his son, baron Joseph Vitta, takes over the project and oversees the décor of the spectacular villa. Many artists work on the residence : Rodin, who designs four works to decorate the entrance and the garden ; Albert Besnard imagines amazing paintings for the ground floor living room ; Félix Bracquemond works on the grandiose décor of the pool room ; and finally Jules Chéret, dear friend of the baron's, paints murals with such colors and lyrism that they will be moved to the Hôtel de Ville, Paris.
