Fine and crisp casts with a thick dark lacquer.
Overall the condition of the pair of bronzes is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is some rubbing, minor scratches and some flaking to the black lacquer at several places. Some dryness is visible to the patina in the crevices. Both ears of one horse are slightly bent. The stem of the tail of the other horse is slightly loose, with a joint visible where it has been reattached. The proper left front leg on one horse may have been restored with a stable hairline fissure visible. Both horses are detachable from the base and currently joined with a peg on both rear feet (the tip of one peg partly missing). This model was previously believed to emanate from the workshops of Giambologna. More recent research identified Fanelli as its undisputed author.
