Literature
M. Schwartz, European Sculpture from the Abbott Guggenheim collection, New York, 2008, p.157, n° 82.
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with minor surface dirt, especially in the crevices, and wear to the patina at the high points consistent with age and handling. Remains of what could be former gilding are visible, especially to the front of Jupiter's proper left lap. The thunder on his proper upraised right hand is missing. Few minor cast flaws are visible at several places. The warm brown patina may have been slightly retouched. Highly detailed cast with fine hammering all over the surface and a magnificent chiseling work to Jupiter' hair and the eagle's feathers.

Catalogue Note
The chiselling of the surface of this bronze is very refined notably in Jupiter’s hair and beard, as well as in the handling of the eagle’s feathers. The movement of the drapery around Jupiter’s body and his strong musculature epitomise the remarkable quality of casting bronzes produced during the end of the 16th century in southern Germany, around Nuremberg and Augsburg. This bronze can be compared to models by Benedikt Wurzelbauer (1548-1620), as his Neptune from the Abbott Guggenheim collection (cf. Schwartz, op. cit.), ou de ceux des ateliers de Marx Labenwolf et Hans Reisinger (vente Sotheby's Londres, The Price Collection, 22 novembre 2000, lot 56).
