Condition

Original canvas, which is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. The reverse of the canvas shows a small area of repair near the bottom edge. There are frame abrasions along the edges with some associated paint loss. There is craquelure throughout, most noticeably to the upper half of the picture as well as diagonal and circular cracks to the area with the children. There are small drips of paint in places, most notably to the chimney and the area around the children. Inspection under UV light reveals an area of retouching to and around the foot of the lying child in the foreground, which corresponds to the aforementioned repair. There is further a small diagonal line of retouching below the face of the child on the left, to the lap of the child on the right as well as some scattered retouching in other places. Held in a metal-gilt wooden frame with plaster mouldings. Unexamined out of frame.
