Description

  • Pavel Pavlovich Dzhogin
  • Dusk
  • signed in Cyrillic and dated 1867 l.r.
  • oil on canvas laid on board
  • 97 by 134cm, 38 1/4 by 52 3/4 in.

Condition

The canvas has been laid down on board. The varnish has discoloured and there is a layer of surface dirt. There is an area of discoloured restoration to the sky and a vertical area through the trees above the left-most swan. There are fine lines of craquelure notably to the impasto and a minor surface scratch to the left-hand edge near the frame. The opaque layer of discoloured varnish prevents a more conclusive examination, but UV light reveals possible areas of retouching in places to the foreground. Held in a gold painted frame. Unexamined out of frame.
