Condition

The subject of this quarter-plate outdoor portrait sits confidently astride his horse, which remained remarkably still as there does not appear to be any blurring of its figure. The sky area and the saddle are tinted in green, conveying a great sense of atmosphere within this plate. There is very minor, uneven rust-coloration at the extreme edges of the image following the contour of the mat. A few tiny spots, including a pen-point-sized green accretion above the horse's ear, are visible upon close inspection. The gilt detailing on this plate - on the horse's harness and on the stirrup - has resulted in rust-colored halos of these areas, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. The plate is otherwise clean. The case is worn overall and the cover is detached. The slip of paper with annotation is pinned to the velvet lining of the case.
