Condition

This handsome, large daguerreotype is an especially well-conceived portrait. Faint rosy, flesh-toned tinting enlivens the sitter's lips and cheeks. Exceptional rich detail is visible throughout, from the sitter's elegant, embellished gown; to her lace bonnet or veil; to her earrings and choker necklace. Light reflects on the sitter's intricate hairstyle. A heavy border of colorful tarnish unevenly follows the contours of the mat. As is visible in the catalogue illustration and when examining the plate closely, there are several small, spidery accretions overall and some pin-point-sized rust-colored spots. When examined in raking light, there is an isolated area of fine pitting in the area of the sitter's torso and hands. There are scattered tiny black accretions on the mat. The black leather case, with push-button closure and two hinges, is in generally good condition. The cover is scuffed and there are two significant jagged scratches.
